Opioid Detoxification

Opioid dependence, tolerance, and addiction have become an ever-increasing problem in our community as well as across the country. The latest statistics show that of all the hydrocodone manufactured in the world, America consumes 99% of it. Of all the opioids manufactured in the world, America consumes 80%. Of all the illicit substances, 70%. This has directly led to an increase in patients who experience dependence, tolerance and addiction. Many of these patients begin their dependence in very legitimate ways, attempting to treat pain problems. Many of these patients would like to stop using, but find it very difficult without some sort of help. It is estimated that approximately 20% of people who are interested in getting help for their dependence, avoid seeking treatment because of the stigma attached to this condition and the unavailability of treatment.

Opioid-dependent patients often prefer office-based treatment because it allows for greater privacy than the more traditional forms of treatment, such as a methadone clinic or inpatient detoxification programs. In addition, because the medication is available by prescription, office-based treatment is often more flexible and convenient than the other treatments. We use advanced treatments such as Buprenorphine (Suboxone®) to ease detox and continue treating the addictive cravings that often lead to relapse.

I have been using this approach for several years now and maintain a referral base of counselors to help. I have found this type of program to be very effective in the management of Opioid-dependent patients. Additionally, we evaluate and treat any other underlying pain or medical problems that may have triggered the substance abuse in the first place. This is a key factor in long-term recovery that is almost always ignored. Many of the minor medical problems associated with this condition may also be addressed using a holistic approach including acupuncture and nutrition as non-pharmacological interventions.

We use evidence-based treatment methods that are individualized for each patient. Our client-centered approach is both empathic and directive in helping patients create the changes necessary to recover from addiction.

Office-Based Opioid Treatment

Suboxone®, also known as buprenorphine, is an FDA-approved outpatient treatment for addiction to opiates and opioids (narcotics). Opioids are powerful narcotic drugs that are highly effective at treating pain; unfortunately they are also highly addictive.

Suboxone® is used as part of The Pain and Stress Management Center program to decrease withdrawal symptoms, help prevent relapse, and in some specific situations, to treat chronic pain.

How does Buprenorphine help stop opiate addiction?

Buprenorphine eliminates withdrawal sensations and treats pain, but only to a certain extent. It is very important that starting Buprenorphine be timed correctly. The first dose should be taken just as withdrawal starts - too early and acute withdrawal can be induced, too late causes needless suffering.

Buprenorphine allows the endorphin process to slowly regenerate, although it is a slow process. For most people the buprenorphine dose can be slowly reduced. But there are many individuals who will never completely regenerate their ability to make endorphins and for them it may be necessary to continue treatment indefinitely. Buprenorphine is a far better alternative than the dangers of opiates and can help them lead normal lives.

Key Benefits of Buprenorphine

  • Reduces or eliminates the pain and suffering of withdrawal
  • Relieves the cravings of opiates
  • Helps people live normal lives
